ACRL has a rich tradition of working with libraries and librarians to promote lifelong learning among college and university students.   Through the various communities of practice (sections, interest groups, committees, etc.), ACRL members have played a vital role in: defining best practices for teaching and instruction; establishing standards for various academic library environments; instituting professional development opportunities for members; and demonstrating the value of libraries to the academic enterprise.

As academic and research libraries begin to emerge from the recent economic crisis, we must continue our vigilance in demonstrating the importance of libraries to the students, faculty and researchers that we assist.  I ask that you allow me the opportunity to work with you – collectively and individually – to develop and enhance the tools and resources that will enable us and our libraries to succeed.  Together, we will affirm the vitality and vibrancy of academic libraries.
